An abreaction is a reaction, usually occurring during therapy, that is the expression and emotional
discharge of subconscious memories and/or emotions.
These can happen spontaneously or be brought about purposefully during hypnosis. When brought on during
hypnosis it can be used to acquire greater depth, cause a revivification or help to remove repressed
emotions.
The emotion within an abreaction is very real, a person can feel the situation as if it is happening there
and then, with all the senses that are involved in the situation - smelling the smells, hearing the sounds,
feeling the pain etc.
Affirmations
An affirmation is a form of suggestion or autosuggestion, in which a statement with positive intentions or
conditions is repeated in order to plant it firmly in the mind. This can be used to help replace negative
thoughts and belief systems.
Age Regression
Age Regression is a technique used during hypnosis to guide a client back to an earlier time in their life,
to explore certain experiences and possibly re experience events that can lead to questions being answered and
positive outcomes achieved.
Alpha
Alpha or alpha state describes the brain wave pattern of a light hypnotic state (8-14Hz). This is also the
stage you are in when you are dozing off to, and waking up from sleep or when you are daydreaming.
Anchor
Anchor is an NLP term, describing a stimulus (sound, sight, word, action or touch) that triggers a desired
response from the subconscious mind. These triggers happen throughout our lives (example - a smell of freshly
baked cakes reminding you of a day baking as a young child with your mother), they can also be suggested during
hypnosis.
Anchoring
Anchoring is the placement of triggers or anchors (see Anchor) in the subconscious mind during hypnosis, to
evoke a desired response when activated.
Associated
Associated - when used in regards to hypnosis and hypnotherapy, refers to seeing the world from ones own
perspective (also see First Person).
Association
A response to one experience or stimulus leads to the effects of another due to repeated pairing. One of the
most famous examples of this is the experiment (commonly known as classical conditioning or Pavlovian
conditioning) by Ivan Pavlov, where the repeated association between a dog and the technician that fed him led
to the dog salivating just on the presence of the technician with no food being brought in.
Aversion Therapy
Aversion Therapy is a form of therapy in which the client is given suggestions which focus on and emphasis
the negative aspects of habit or behaviour or even introduce negative aspects to a habit or behaviour. The
intended result of this type of conditioning is to associate the unwanted habit or behaviour with the negative
and unpleasant sensations in order for change to take place. An example of this is the use of causing the smell
of cigarette smoke to bring on nausea. This however can backfire if the subject of the aversion therapy walks
into a room where someone has previously smoke they would also feel nauseous in that situation too.
Animal Magnetism
In 1774 Franz Anton Mesmer came across what he called ‘animal magnetism’ (after unsuccessfully
treatment of a patient he decided to try the unorthodox methods of one of his contemporaries – Father
Maximilian Hell). Mesmer believed that there was a universal magnetic fluid – and something similar to this
fluid existed in the human body. For more information on this go to the History Of Hypnosis page.
Auto-Hypnosis
Auto hypnosis is self induce hypnotic state. Learning to take oneself into a hypnotic state without the help
of a hypnotist. Also known as Self Hypnosis
